Your belly after birth needs time

After birth, your belly does not simply snap back — and that is completely normal. During pregnancy the abdominal wall, the connective tissue and the fascia stretch a great deal, the two halves of the straight abdominal muscle often move apart (sometimes called diastasis), and your body holds extra fluid. After the baby arrives, your body gradually reverses much of this on its own: fluid is cleared, tissue regains tone and the belly slowly settles. This can take weeks to many months and differs strongly from one woman to the next. As a general guideline, after an uncomplicated vaginal birth — where there is no scar — gentle work on the belly can begin from about six weeks, once you feel ready. How your recovery is going, and whether a separation of the abdominal muscles needs attention, is something your midwife, GP or specialist is best placed to judge.

  • Stretched connective tissue, fascia and extra fluid are part of a normal recovery

  • After a vaginal birth, gentle belly work can generally start from about six weeks

  • How recovery goes differs per person — your midwife or GP is your first point of contact

How a C-section scar heals

If you gave birth by caesarean, you also have a scar to consider, and a scar changes the timeline. In the first weeks the wound closes and the tissue underneath knits back together; in this fragile phase the scar should be left in peace and cared for as your doctor advises. Only once the scar is fully closed and no longer fragile is there room to think about gentle scar work. As a clear guideline, scar massage on a C-section scar typically starts from about eight weeks — unless your doctor or specialist advises a different moment. Be honest with yourself about what you expect: a scar is never removed, and no one can promise a cure. What gentle scar massage may do is help the scar feel more supple and, in some cases, slightly improve its appearance over time — with no guaranteed result. Want to understand the tissue itself? How gentle connective-tissue and scar massage can fit in

Once your body is ready and you have the green light, gentle connective-tissue and scar massage can become a supportive part of your postpartum recovery. The connective-tissue work is a soft technique aimed at the fascia and the tissue around the belly; for the scar, gentle scar massage can help it feel more supple. A single lymphatic drainage can support the natural clearance of fluid and help ease a heavy or tense feeling. Important to be honest about: this is support of your own natural recovery, never a medical treatment and never a replacement for the care of your midwife, GP or specialist. We make no promises about a fixed result. Want to know more about the techniques? See what lymphatic drainage is, and read how we look at marks on the skin in stretch marks treatment explained.

Can support

Suppler tissue

Gentle connective-tissue and scar work is aimed at helping the fascia and a healed scar feel more supple — supporting a process your body is already doing.

Feeling

Lighter feeling

Many women experience a lighter, less tense feeling around the belly — without any promise about a fixed result.

No claim

No removal

A scar is never removed and we make no cure or medical claims. A treatment is a complement to your own recovery, never a replacement.

Always in consultation with your midwife or doctor

This is the most important thing on this page: after birth, every step towards belly or scar massage should be taken in consultation with your midwife, GP or specialist. They know how your delivery went, how your recovery is going and any risks involved, and they can judge whether and when gentle work is sensible. After a vaginal birth without a scar, recovery work can generally begin from about six weeks; around a C-section scar we typically work only from about eight weeks, once the scar is fully closed and no longer fragile — unless your doctor advises a different moment. These are guidelines, not fixed dates. Especially after a C-section, we only start with the green light. In doubt, consult your midwife, GP or specialist; especially after a C-section, only start with the green light.

1

Ask your midwife or GP

Discuss with your midwife, GP or specialist whether and when gentle belly or scar work is suitable in your recovery.

2

Wait for the green light

We only start once you have the go-ahead and the belly or scar has healed sufficiently and is no longer fragile.

3

Calm and gentle

After that we look together, with a soft approach, at what may feel supportive — without promises about the result.

When you go to your midwife or doctor first

Not everything belongs with a gentle, relaxing treatment. There are signals that should always be assessed medically first. Do you get a fever, do you see or feel signs of an infection, or does the scar or area become red, warm or painful? Is there wound discharge, does the scar reopen, or do the swelling or pain suddenly increase? Then contact your midwife, GP or specialist first. A relaxing treatment is not intended to assess or treat such complaints, and in doubt the rule applies without exception: your midwife or doctor first, and only then look at whether gentle work is suitable.

  • Fever or signs of an infection — your midwife or doctor first

  • Redness, warmth, wound discharge or a reopening scar — have it assessed medically first

  • Sudden increase in swelling or pain — contact your doctor first

Frequently asked questions about postpartum belly and scar recovery

When can I start with belly recovery after a natural birth?

After an uncomplicated vaginal birth, where there is no scar, gentle work on the belly can generally begin from about six weeks — once your body has had time to settle and you feel ready. This is a general guideline and not a fixed date: how recovery goes differs per person. If you had a C-section or any complications, a scar changes the picture and a different timeline applies. In doubt, ask your midwife, GP or specialist, and only start with the green light. BodyFix treats women only and is a private practice that does not work through health insurance.

When can I start scar massage after a C-section?

Scar massage on a C-section scar typically starts from about eight weeks, once the scar is fully closed and no longer fragile — unless your doctor or specialist advises a different moment. This is a guideline, not a promise: every recovery is different and the judgement of your treating doctor always comes first. Especially after a C-section, we only begin with the green light. We never remove a scar; gentle work may, in some cases, help the appearance or suppleness, but no result is guaranteed. In doubt, consult your midwife, GP or specialist first.

Can scar massage remove my C-section scar or stretch marks?

No. A scar is never removed, and we make no medical or cure claims. What gentle connective-tissue and scar massage may do is help a scar feel more supple and, in some cases, slightly improve its appearance over time — but this varies from person to person and nothing is guaranteed. The same honesty applies to stretch marks. Our work is supportive and a complement to your own recovery, never a medical treatment. Whether it is suitable for you is best decided in consultation with your midwife, GP or specialist.

What does treatment at BodyFix cost and is it covered by insurance?

Our connective tissue massage costs €65 (30 min), €130 (60 min) or €195 (90 min). A single lymphatic drainage is €45, or €200 for a 5-session card. BodyFix is a private practice that treats women only: we do not work through health insurance, so there is no reimbursement and you pay yourself.
