Postpartum recovery

Connective tissue massage after birth — for skin, abdominal muscles and fluid retention.

Your body needs different care after birth

Pregnancy and birth change the connective tissue profoundly. The skin has been stretched, the abdominal muscles are weakened, and adhesions have formed in the subcutaneous tissue. Fluid retention and residual fat deposits are common — but they do not resolve on their own. Connective tissue massage after birth addresses the cause structurally.

What does connective tissue massage do after birth?

During pregnancy, the connective tissue adapts to support the growing body. After birth, this tissue does not automatically return to its original state. Adhesions remain, the skin loses elasticity and the lymphatic system needs support to drain excess fluid.

Deep manual connective tissue massage breaks down these adhesions and stimulates the body to repair the tissue. Combined with lymphatic drainage, fluid accumulations and waste products are actively removed. You can read more about the phases of postpartum belly and scar recovery in our knowledge base.

1

Break down adhesions

Targeted deep pressure resolves the adhesions that have formed in the skin and connective tissue as a result of pregnancy and birth.

2

Restore the skin

Improved circulation stimulates collagen and elastin production. The skin recovers its elasticity and firmness — including in areas with stretch marks.

3

Drain fluid

Device-assisted lymphatic drainage actively stimulates the removal of fluid and the residual fluid retention present in the tissue after birth.

Diagnosis first, then treatment

Every postpartum situation is different. The Bodyreading — our thorough diagnosis of connective tissue, skin structure and complaints — determines which treatment protocol is most effective for your body and your birth experience.

A personalised treatment plan follows: a combination of connective tissue massage and lymphatic drainage, tailored to what your body needs after birth. We treat the abdomen, legs, hips and buttocks — exactly the areas that underwent the most change during pregnancy.

Our therapists are specially trained in pregnancy and postpartum treatment and have a minimum of 2,500 hours of practical experience. We are a treatment institute — not a salon.

Postpartum recovery — connective tissue massage after birth at Bodyfix Amsterdam

What can you expect?

Recovery after birth takes time. Connective tissue massage structurally accelerates that process — but we are honest about what is realistic and within what timeframe.

1–4

First sessions

Activation of the connective tissue. Fluid retention begins to reduce. You feel the tissue releasing. Circulation visibly improves.

5–10

Visible results

Most women see noticeable improvement in skin texture, abdominal contour and overall firmness. Adhesions dissolve, the skin looks firmer.

11–15

Lasting recovery

Structural recovery of connective tissue and skin. In a subsequent course we build on the earlier result.

Results depend on the birth, age, lifestyle and individual recovery capacity. After your free consultation we will give you a realistic picture.

Everything about postpartum recovery at Bodyfix

When can I start postpartum connective tissue massage? +

After a vaginal birth you can generally start from 6 weeks postpartum, once your midwife or gynaecologist has given the go-ahead. After a caesarean section we generally advise starting from around 8 weeks, once the scar has healed sufficiently — unless your doctor advises a different moment. We always discuss this during the free consultation.

What does postpartum connective tissue massage actually do? +

Connective tissue massage after birth works on the subcutaneous tissue that has been stretched during pregnancy and has formed adhesions. The treatment breaks down these adhesions, stimulates circulation, strengthens the skin and helps reduce residual fat deposits and fluid retention.

Does it also help with a post-baby tummy? +

Yes. Connective tissue massage on the abdomen addresses the adhesions that cause loose skin. Combined with lymphatic drainage, fluid accumulations in the abdominal area are also drained. We are honest: structural results require a course of several sessions.

Can I be treated while breastfeeding? +

Yes, breastfeeding is not a contraindication for connective tissue massage. We do not treat the breast area itself. The lymphatic drainage component is also safe during breastfeeding. Do mention it during the consultation so we can tailor the treatment protocol accordingly.

How many treatments do I need after giving birth? +

Most women see visible results after 6–10 treatments. For full recovery of skin and connective tissue we recommend a course of 10–15 sessions, depending on the birth, the degree of stretching and your body. After the consultation we draw up a realistic plan.

Does it also work for a caesarean scar? +

Yes. We generally start from around 8 weeks, once the caesarean scar has healed sufficiently — unless your doctor advises a different moment. Connective tissue massage can then help release adhesions around the scar. This softens the tissue, reduces a pulling sensation and improves mobility.

How does Bodyfix differ from other postpartum practitioners? +

Bodyfix works exclusively with the self-developed Bodyfix Method: deep manual connective tissue massage combined with device-assisted lymphatic drainage. We always start with a diagnosis (Bodyreading) and draw up a personalised treatment plan. Our therapists have a minimum of 2,500 hours of practical experience and specialise in pregnancy and postpartum treatment. Since 2008.
