The combination of lymphatic drainage and connective tissue massage

The combination of lymphatic drainage and connective tissue massage is the core treatment at BodyFix. Where many practices offer one technique or the other, founder Agnieszka Kadula brought them together in the BodyFix Method: deep manual connective tissue massage combined with device-assisted lymphatic drainage. This pairing forms the basis of most treatment plans in our practice.

BodyFix has specialised in connective tissue and fascia techniques since 2008 and describes itself as the longest-running specialised connective tissue practice in Amsterdam. Over those years the combination treatment has become our signature: the approach is aimed first at working the tissue manually and then at supporting the body’s natural fluid drainage. You can read more about the individual techniques on our pages about lymphatic drainage in Amsterdam and our full range of treatments.

  • Deep manual connective tissue massage, aimed at making connective tissue and fascia more supple.
  • Device-assisted lymphatic drainage, aimed at supporting the body’s natural fluid drainage.
  • A diagnosis-first approach (Bodyreading) before the first treatment.

Working the connective tissue, then supporting drainage

The thinking behind the combination is that the two techniques are intended to complement one another. Connective tissue massage focuses on the structure of the tissue: it is aimed at making connective tissue and fascia more supple. Lymphatic drainage then focuses on supporting the body’s natural fluid drainage through the lymphatic system. Many clients describe the combined approach as comfortable, though experiences can differ.

The order is chosen deliberately and is always built up cautiously: first the tissue is worked, then drainage is supported. The therapist matches pressure and intensity to your complaint and to how the tissue responds.

1

Work

With deep manual connective tissue massage the tissue is worked cautiously, aimed at more supple connective tissue and fascia.

2

Support

Device-assisted lymphatic drainage then aims to support the natural drainage of fluid through the lymphatic vessels.

3

Complement

The techniques are intended to complement one another. Many clients describe the tissue afterwards as feeling more supple and lighter, though results can vary from person to person.

You can read more about our diagnosis-first approach on the page about the BodyFix Method.

For which complaints do we use the combination?

At BodyFix the combination treatment is used for a range of complaints. Whether the combination is suitable for your situation is determined by the therapist during the intake and Bodyreading. The approach and intensity differ per complaint, and results can vary from person to person.

  • Cellulite — working the connective tissue combined with supporting fluid drainage.
  • Lipoedema — a common reason to combine both techniques; always discuss your situation with your treating doctor first.
  • Lymphoedema and oedema — aimed at supporting fluid drainage. Read more on lymphoedema and oedema.
  • Postpartum recovery — for those who want to work on the body after pregnancy.

For medical conditions such as lipoedema and lymphoedema we work in a supportive role and recommend consulting your doctor or specialist first. The combination treatment is not a replacement for medical care and is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment.

From Bodyreading to treatment plan

Every plan begins with diagnosis. Before we carry out the first treatment we perform a Bodyreading: an assessment of the tissue, the fascia and your complaint. Based on that, the therapist draws up a treatment plan in which the combination of lymphatic drainage and connective tissue massage is tailored to your situation.
