Basics
The fundamentals of fascia & connective tissue
The most common questions about connective tissue massage almost always begin with the same foundation: what is fascia, and why does it matter how you treat it? BodyFix has specialised in connective-tissue and fascia techniques since 2008, and the answers below explain the essentials in plain language. This is general information and does not replace medical advice.
What is fascia?
Fascia is the subcutaneous network of connective tissue that wraps around, connects and supports your muscles, organs, blood vessels and skin. It consists mainly of collagen and elastin fibres and runs through the body as one continuous web. Supple fascia glides easily; when it becomes hardened or stuck together, the tissue can feel stiffer and less mobile. You can read more in our knowledge base: what is fascia.
How does connective tissue massage work?
Where a regular massage works mainly on the muscles and at the surface, connective tissue massage is aimed at the fascia itself: deep, focused manual techniques work the connective tissue with the aim of releasing adhesions and giving the tissue more room to move. How the tissue responds can differ from person to person. Within the BodyFix Method this deep manual connective tissue massage is combined with device-assisted lymphatic drainage. Read more about our treatments or about the approach on the BodyFix Method page. This is general information and does not replace medical advice.
What are adhesions?
Adhesions are often described as layers of fascia that normally glide smoothly past one another beginning to stick together. This is sometimes associated with factors such as hormonal changes, ageing, pregnancy, scar tissue or prolonged inactivity. The tissue can then feel stiffer or less mobile. Our treatment is aimed at releasing adhesions, though results differ per person; you will find more explanation under releasing adhesions. This is general information and does not replace medical advice.
Complaints
Complaints
Which complaints do we focus on?
BodyFix focuses on a broad range of connective-tissue and skin concerns. Below are the questions we are asked most often about specific complaints. Please note that the answers here are general in nature and do not replace medical advice or a medical diagnosis.
Can connective tissue massage be used with cellulite?
Cellulite is often related to the structure of the subcutaneous fascia. Connective tissue massage is aimed at that underlying tissue structure rather than the skin alone; how the tissue responds differs from person to person and we promise no fixed result. See how we work with this on our cellulite treatment in Amsterdam page. This is general information and does not replace medical advice.
Can I come with lipoedema or lymphoedema?
Lipoedema, lymphoedema and other forms of oedema are medical conditions. BodyFix may be able to work in a supportive way with lymphatic drainage combined with connective tissue massage, but this is explicitly not a substitute for medical care and is not a medical diagnosis. With lipoedema or lymphoedema, always consult your GP or treating specialist first to check whether this support is suitable for you. More information is available on our lymphatic drainage in Amsterdam page.
What about pregnancy, postpartum or scars?
Around pregnancy, after giving birth and with scars (for example after a C-section), the connective tissue can change. BodyFix gives this specific attention. Whether a treatment is suitable at a particular moment depends on your situation and is discussed during the consultation. During pregnancy we adapt the treatment and, if there is any doubt, refer you to your midwife or doctor; this answer does not replace medical advice. We always discuss this first during your free consultation.
Treatment & results
Treatment & results
What can you expect?
Questions about the course of treatment, the experience and the results. Please bear in mind that every person and every complaint responds differently; the answers below are general in nature and do not replace medical advice.
- ✓
How many treatments will I need?
That differs per person and per complaint. Some people choose individual treatments, others a series via a session card. During the consultation and the first Bodyreading you receive personal advice that fits your situation and your goal.
- ✓
When will I see results?
The pace at which you may notice change is individual and depends on your complaint, your tissue and how regularly you are treated. We are deliberately honest about this and promise no fixed timeframes or results; your therapist discusses a realistic expectation with you.
- ✓
Is the treatment painful?
Connective tissue massage goes deeper than a relaxation massage and can feel more intense on sensitive areas. It may feel firm, but the pressure is always adjusted to what is comfortable and bearable for you — do let your therapist know during the treatment.
- ✓
Will I get bruising?
Because of the deep technique, some people may experience mild tenderness or an occasional bruise; when this happens it is usually temporary. How your skin and tissue respond differs from person to person. If you bruise easily or use blood thinners, please mention this during the consultation.
Every course of treatment is diagnosis-first, starting with a Bodyreading. The BodyFix Method was developed by founder Agnieszka Kadula and combines deep manual connective tissue massage with device-assisted lymphatic drainage. You can read more about it on the BodyFix Method page or book a free consultation.
