Massage & cellulite

Does connective tissue massage work on cellulite?

The most common questions about cellulite almost always begin with the same doubt: does massage really help, or is it too good to be true? BodyFix has specialised in connective-tissue and fascia techniques since 2008, and deliberately chooses honest answers below. We work on the underlying tissue structure, but promise no fixed result.

Does massage really help with cellulite?

Cellulite is related to the structure of the subcutaneous fascia: the connective tissue beneath the skin. Connective tissue massage is aimed at that underlying tissue structure rather than the skin alone. How the tissue responds differs from person to person and we promise no fixed result. It is not a cure and not a guarantee, but an approach that targets the layer where cellulite forms according to the commonly accepted model.

What causes cellulite?

Cellulite (‘orange-peel skin’) develops through the way subcutaneous fat and the connective tissue structure (fascia) interact. Vertical strands of connective tissue can pull the skin inwards in places while the fatty tissue between them bulges forwards, creating the characteristic dimpled pattern. Factors such as hormones, circulation and lifestyle also play a part. Cellulite is more common in women than in men. Can you massage cellulite away?

‘Massaging it away’ as a promise does not exist, and we deliberately do not suggest it. The treatment is aimed at influencing the underlying tissue structure and may, for some people, reduce the visibility of cellulite. The result differs from person to person and we give no guarantee; cellulite does not disappear permanently after one session. We discuss a realistic expectation during your free consultation.

Treatments & results

How many treatments and what result?

Questions about the number of treatments, the pace and keeping the result. We are deliberately honest about this: every person and every type of tissue responds differently, and the answers below are general in nature and do not replace medical advice.

  • How many treatments will I need for cellulite?

There is no fixed number that applies to everyone. It depends on the degree of cellulite, the firmness of the connective tissue, your lifestyle and how your tissue responds. As a guide, some people notice gradual change within roughly 5 to 8 treatments, while a fuller course is often thought of as around 10 to 15 sessions. These are indicative figures, not promises. What is right for you is determined individually after the Bodyreading at the free consultation.

  • How long does it take before I see results?

The pace at which you notice change is individual and depends on your tissue and the regularity of the treatments. We are deliberately honest about this and promise no fixed timeframes or results. Your therapist will discuss a realistic expectation with you during the consultation.

  • Does the result last and does cellulite come back?

Maintaining the result usually calls for upkeep and a healthy lifestyle. Cellulite can return; we promise no permanent result. Many people therefore choose periodic maintenance treatments combined with exercise and nutrition. We are transparent about this, so you know what you may realistically expect.

  • What is the difference compared with an anti-cellulite cream?

An anti-cellulite cream works mainly on the skin surface — the outermost layer — and can give a temporarily smoother or better-hydrated feel. According to the commonly accepted model, the structure of cellulite lies deeper, in the fascia and the fat compartments. Surface products do not reach that underlying structure the way a deep manual treatment does. This is not a judgement about any specific product, but relates to the layer on which a topical product works.

The approach

How we approach cellulite

Questions about the technique itself: what does connective tissue massage do, how does lymphatic drainage fit in and what does your lifestyle contribute? The BodyFix Method was developed by founder Agnieszka Kadula and always starts diagnosis-first with a Bodyreading.

How does connective tissue massage work on cellulite?

Using deep, focused manual techniques, the connective tissue — the fascia — is worked, aimed at releasing adhesions and giving the tissue more room to move. Within the BodyFix Method this manual connective tissue massage is combined with device-assisted lymphatic drainage, diagnosis-first via a Bodyreading. How the tissue responds differs from person to person and we give no guarantee of effectiveness. Read more on the BodyFix Method page or on cellulite treatment in Amsterdam.

Does lymphatic drainage help with cellulite?

Lymphatic drainage can be used as part of the combination treatment and is aimed at the removal of fluid and at circulation. Within the BodyFix Method it is attuned to the deep connective tissue massage. Its effect on the visibility of cellulite differs from person to person and we promise no fixed result. You can read more about this on lymphatic drainage in Amsterdam.

Do exercise and healthy nutrition help with cellulite?

A healthy lifestyle with enough exercise and good nutrition supports your overall wellbeing and the result of the treatment. Exercise and nutrition do not resolve the structural side of cellulite on their own, but work best in combination with the treatment. This is general information and not a medical claim.

Which areas does the treatment work on (legs, buttocks, stomach)?

Cellulite most often sits on the buttocks and (upper) legs, and sometimes on the stomach or upper arms. Which zones we treat is decided together during the consultation, based on your situation and goal. See what the approach means for beautiful legs or read more on cellulite treatment in Amsterdam.

Do women only come to BodyFix, and can the treatment help with cellulite?

BodyFix treats women exclusively: we are fully specialised in treatments for the female body. Cellulite is most common in women, and our entire approach — diagnosis-first via a Bodyreading, deep connective tissue massage combined with lymphatic drainage — is tailored to women. We discuss what is realistic for your situation during the free consultation.
