Connective tissue massage vs lymphatic drainage — why we combine both
Two techniques, two systems, one combined approach. Discover the difference between connective tissue massage and lymphatic drainage — and why BodyFix combines both in its signature treatment.
Book a free consultationWhat is lymphatic drainage?
Lymphatic drainage is a treatment aimed at the lymphatic system — the network of vessels that drains lymph fluid and plays a role in fluid balance and immune defence. The treatment stimulates the drainage of lymph fluid through gentle, rhythmic movements or through a device-assisted technique.
There are two main forms: manual lymphatic drainage (with the hands), and device-assisted lymphatic drainage, in which a device applies controlled pressure to stimulate the lymphatic system. At BodyFix, device-assisted lymphatic drainage is used as a fixed part of the combined treatment — not as a stand-alone session.
Lymphatic drainage is aimed at supporting fluid drainage. Many clients experience a lighter feeling after a treatment. With conditions such as lymphoedema, lymphatic drainage can offer support as a complement to medical care, but does not replace it. With any medical complaint, always consult your doctor first.

What is connective tissue massage?
Connective tissue massage — also known as fascia technique or connective tissue technique — is aimed at the fascia: the deep connective tissue network that wraps around and connects muscles, organs and structures in the body. Through targeted manual pressure and specific techniques, the treatment is aimed at working loose adhesions in this tissue.
Connective tissue massage is deeper in nature than a classic relaxation massage. Many clients experience a more intense sensation during the treatment, but also feel that the tissue is more supple afterwards. The technique is different from lymphatic drainage: the aim is not to stimulate the lymphatic system, but to address adhesions in the fascia.
At BodyFix we work with manual connective tissue massage as the core of the treatment. You can read more about the technical background in our knowledge base.

The difference at a glance
At first glance, connective tissue massage and lymphatic drainage look alike — both are massage techniques that work on the body — but they target different systems and have a different aim.
| Technique | Suitable for | Sensation | BodyFix approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lymphatic drainage | Stimulating lymphatic drainage; support with fluid retention; can offer support with oedema (as a complement to medical care) | Light, rhythmic, relaxing | Device-assisted, integrated into the combination treatment |
| Connective tissue massage | Working loose adhesions in the fascia; cellulite; skin firming; postpartum recovery; scars | Deeper, more intense — many clients experience a pleasant tension | Manual, diagnosis-first via Bodyreading |
| BodyFix combination | Fascia and lymphatic drainage in one session — signature treatment | Deep fascia work + closing lymphatic stimulation | The BodyFix Method — developed and refined since 2008 |
Not either/or: why the combination
Connective tissue massage and lymphatic drainage are not each other's competitor. They work on different systems — fascia and the lymphatic system — and therefore complement one another. That is precisely why the combination of both techniques has become the signature treatment at BodyFix.
The reasoning is straightforward: the BodyFix connective tissue massage works loose adhesions in the fascia, which can make the tissue more supple. Lymphatic drainage is aimed at stimulating the drainage of lymph fluid. When both techniques are combined within a single session, they work as an extension of one another: the fascia work can influence the accessibility of the tissue, while the lymphatic drainage supports drainage. Many clients experience that the combination gives a lighter and more supple feeling than either technique on its own.
BodyFix has been refining this combined approach since 2008 into the core of its own method. It is not an add-on: both techniques are an equal part of every treatment.

A medically careful approach: a complement to, not a replacement for, medical care
The BodyFix approach
The combined treatment is embedded in a broader way of working: the BodyFix Method. Every treatment starts diagnosis-first, with a Bodyreading. This is an assessment of the tissue and posture, so that the treatment fits the client's specific situation — not a standard protocol.
BodyFix works with medically trained therapists with a higher professional education physiotherapy background and 2,500+ hours of training in massage techniques. The method was developed by founder Agnieszka Kadula. BodyFix is rated 4.9 out of 5 based on 205 reviews.
You can read more about the background of lymphatic drainage at BodyFix on the lymphatic drainage Amsterdam page. The combined approach is described on the page about the combination treatment of lymphatic drainage and connective tissue in the knowledge base.
Bodyreading
Diagnosis-first: an assessment of tissue and posture before the first treatment, so that the approach fits your situation.
Connective tissue massage
Deep, targeted manual techniques aimed at adhesions in the fascia. Many clients experience that the tissue feels more supple after a treatment.
Device-assisted lymphatic drainage
Closing lymphatic stimulation as a fixed part of every session — the signature combination that sets the BodyFix Method apart.
Frequently asked questions
Unsure about connective tissue massage, lymphatic drainage or the combined approach? Below are the most frequently asked questions.
What is the difference between connective tissue massage and lymphatic drainage?
Connective tissue massage is aimed at the fascia — the deep connective tissue network in the body. Through targeted manual techniques, adhesions are worked loose and the tissue can feel more supple. Lymphatic drainage stimulates the drainage of lymph fluid and is aimed at the lymphatic system, not at the fascia itself. The two techniques target different systems and therefore complement one another in the BodyFix combination treatment.
Why does BodyFix combine connective tissue massage and lymphatic drainage?
Connective tissue massage works loose adhesions in the fascia, while lymphatic drainage can support the drainage of fluid and waste products. At BodyFix both techniques are the core of the signature treatment: by combining them within a single session, they work as an extension of one another. This is why the combined approach forms the BodyFix Method, developed and refined since 2008.
Is the combination treatment also suitable for lipoedema or lymphoedema?
Many clients with lipoedema or lymphoedema visit BodyFix as a complement to their medical care. The treatment is aimed at connective tissue and lymphatic drainage and can offer support, but it does not replace medical advice or treatment from a doctor or specialist. Always consult your treating doctor about these conditions before starting a treatment.
How does a consultation at BodyFix work?
Every first treatment begins with a free 20-minute consultation. During the consultation the therapist discusses your situation and carries out a Bodyreading — an assessment of the tissue and posture — so that the treatment fits your specific situation. The consultation is entirely without obligation and does not replace a medical consultation. Book your free consultation here.
