Buccal (intra-oral) massage explained: working on the facial fascia

During a buccal massage, work is also done inside the mouth, against the inside of the cheek. This makes the deeper facial muscles and the facial fascia easier to reach. Discover what the technique is, why fascia in the face matters and what you can realistically expect from it.

What is buccal massage?

Buccal massage is a facial treatment in which work is done not only on the outside, but also intra-orally — against the inside of the cheek. By massaging from within, the therapist reaches the deeper facial muscles and the facial fascia, which are harder to reach from the outside. The cheek is, as it were, taken between the fingers, so that tension in the muscles and the connective tissue around the jaw, cheekbones and cheeks can calmly be released. Want to read the basics first about the tissue this works on? Then have a look at what fascia exactly is.

  • Work is done both on the outside and inside the mouth

  • This makes the deeper facial muscles and fascia easier to reach

  • The aim is relaxation, suppleness and a fresh appearance

At BodyFix — specialised in connective tissue and fascia techniques since 2008 — working on the fascia is central, in the face too. Curious about the offering itself? Then have a look at the treatment page about buccal massage in Amsterdam.

Why fascia in your face matters

Your face has fascia too: the fine connective tissue that wraps around and connects the facial muscles. Just as elsewhere, this tissue can feel stiffer and more tense, for example because of stress, jaw tension or unconsciously clenching your face. That tension and stiffness can influence the appearance and feel of the face — your face may feel more tired or less fresh. This is not a condition, but an understandable response of tissue that holds on to a lot. By working specifically on that facial fascia, a buccal massage can help calmly release that tension.

1

Built-up tension

Stress, jaw tension and habits make the facial muscles and fascia feel stiffer over time.

2

Stiffer connective tissue

The connective tissue around the muscles becomes less supple, which can influence the appearance and feel of the face.

3

Targeted release

By working on the fascia from the inside and the outside, that tension can calmly be released.

How skin quality and firmness relate to the tissue beneath it, you can read in skin firming and skin quality explained. And how fascia changes over the years, you can read in fascia and ageing explained.

How a buccal massage works

During a buccal massage, the therapist combines work on the outside of the face with targeted techniques from within, against the inside of the cheek. It is about gentle yet targeted pressure: the tissue is worked calmly to release tension and to support circulation and natural drainage. Because work is done intra-orally, the treatment reaches muscles and fascia that are harder to touch from the outside, adjusted to what feels comfortable for you. Many women describe a relaxed, more supple and fresher feeling — not a permanent or medical change.

Supports

Suppleness

Targeted pressure on the facial fascia can help soften stiff, tense tissue — for a more supple feeling.

Feeling

Fresh appearance

By releasing tension and supporting circulation, many women experience a relaxed, fresher appearance.

No claim

No facelift

A buccal massage does not replace a facelift and gives no permanent or cosmetic-surgical results. Choose it for how it feels.

What you can and cannot expect

It is tempting to think of a permanent, rejuvenating result with a facial treatment. That is not how it works, and we want to say that honestly. A buccal massage does not permanently rejuvenate your face and does not replace a facelift or any other cosmetic-surgical procedure. What the technique can do is help release tension in the facial muscles and fascia, support circulation and so give a relaxed, more supple and fresher feeling and appearance. The gain lies in relaxation, suppleness and appearance, not in a miracle promise. For the full range of facial treatments you can visit the page about the natural facelift in Amsterdam.

As with our other treatments, we work diagnosis-first within the BodyFix Method: with a Bodyreading we first look at the whole before we begin. This method was developed by founder Agnieszka Kadula and is carried out by medically trained therapists with a physiotherapy background and 2,500+ hours of training. This information is general in nature and does not replace medical advice or a diagnosis.

Who buccal massage is for

A buccal massage is a relaxing treatment, not a medical procedure. BodyFix is a private practice that does not work through health insurance and treats women only. Do you have complaints in your jaw, teeth or face, or suspect a medical cause? Then have that assessed first by a doctor, dentist or specialist. After that you can look with peace of mind at what a buccal massage can mean for your feeling of relaxation and appearance.

Frequently asked questions about buccal massage

Is work really done inside the mouth during buccal massage?

Yes, that is exactly what sets a buccal massage apart. Besides working on the outside of the face, the therapist also massages intra-orally with a glove on, against the inside of the cheek. This makes the deeper facial muscles and the facial fascia easier to reach than with an ordinary facial massage from the outside alone. It is always about gentle, targeted pressure, and the treatment is built up calmly so that it stays pleasant and comfortable for you.

Is buccal massage an alternative to a facelift?

No, a buccal massage is not an alternative to and not a replacement for a facelift or any other cosmetic-surgical procedure. It is a relaxing treatment that can help release tension in the facial muscles and fascia and can support circulation. Many women experience a relaxed, fresher and more supple feeling as a result. That effect lies in relaxation and appearance, not in a permanent or medical change to your face.

Does buccal massage feel uncomfortable or painful?

Most women experience a buccal massage as unusual but pleasant and relaxing. Working on the inside of the cheek takes a little getting used to at first, but the pressure is gentle and targeted and is adjusted to what is comfortable for you. On a really tense or stiff spot the pressure can feel a bit more intense, without it having to be painful. Always say so if something does not feel pleasant, and the therapist will adjust the treatment.

How long is a buccal massage noticeable?

Many women notice a relaxed, more supple and fresher feeling in the face right after a treatment. How long that lasts differs from person to person and is linked to your lifestyle, tension and how your tissue responds. Fascia that has become stiff over a longer period often benefits from several sessions because the tissue gives way gradually. We make no promises about a permanent or fixed result; during the free intake we discuss what is realistic for you.
