Fascia and ageing: how your connective tissue changes over the years

As the years pass, your fascia changes from within: collagen and elastin renew more slowly and the tissue holds on to less moisture. Discover how that affects your skin and suppleness and how connective tissue massage can support a more supple, fresher feeling.

What changes in fascia over time

Fascia is the connective tissue that runs through your whole body like a fine, coherent web, linking your muscles, joints and skin together. This tissue is largely made up of collagen and elastin: fibres that give it firmness and resilience. As you get older, these fibres renew themselves more slowly and the tissue holds on to less moisture. As a result, fascia can feel less elastic and a little stiffer than before — a natural process that everyone goes through, not a condition. Want to read the basics first? Then have a look at what fascia exactly is.

  • Collagen and elastin renew themselves more slowly as you get older

  • The tissue holds on to less moisture and can feel stiffer

  • A natural, normal process — not a complaint to worry about

At BodyFix — specialised in connective tissue and fascia techniques since 2008 — we look at how your tissue feels as a whole, not just at the skin on the outside. How firmness and skin quality relate to the fascia is covered in our article about skin firming and skin quality.

How this affects your skin and suppleness

Your skin and the fascia beneath it form one whole. When the connective tissue becomes less elastic and a little drier, you often notice it in your skin too: it can feel less supple or less resilient. Many women describe it as a feeling that their tissue has become «stiffer», especially in spots that have had little variation in movement for years. It is an interplay of time, lifestyle and movement, and a gradual process — not a sudden change.

1

Slower renewal

Collagen and elastin are produced less quickly, so the resilience of the tissue gradually decreases.

2

Less hydration

The connective tissue holds on to less moisture and can therefore start to feel drier and stiffer.

3

Less supple feeling

The combination makes skin and fascia feel less supple, certainly in spots that move little.

In the face too, the fascia plays a role in how fresh and relaxed you feel. Read more about that in our article on buccal massage or have a look at the natural facelift in Amsterdam.

What connective tissue massage does and does not do

It is tempting to think that a massage «reverses» ageing or permanently firms the skin. That is not how it works, and we want to say so honestly. Connective tissue massage is not an anti-ageing treatment, not a medical or cosmetic-surgical procedure and does not reverse the natural ageing process. What the technique can do is support the circulation and suppleness of the tissue, so that skin and fascia can feel more supple and fresher. The benefit lies in suppleness, circulation and a relaxed appearance, not in rejuvenating or correcting your body.

Supports

Suppleness

Deep manual techniques target the fascia and can help soften stiff, less elastic tissue — for a more supple feeling.

Supports

Circulation

Targeted pressure on the connective tissue can support circulation, which may contribute to a fresh, lively feeling.

No claim

No rejuvenation

Connective tissue massage does not reverse ageing and is not an anti-ageing or medical procedure. Choose it for how it feels and what it supports.

How BodyFix supports suppleness

Within the BodyFix Method we look at the whole first. With a diagnosis-first approach (Bodyreading) we map out where your tissue feels stiff or less supple. We then work with deep manual connective tissue massage targeting the fascia, to gradually help soften tissue that feels stiff and to support circulation. The aim is a more supple, fresher feeling — not a promise about how your skin will look.

1

Bodyreading first

Before the first treatment we read the body and look at where the tissue feels less supple.

2

Deep connective tissue massage

Targeted manual techniques are aimed at the fascia, with the goal of making stiff tissue feel more supple.

3

Supporting circulation

By working on the connective tissue, circulation can be supported, for a fresher, livelier feeling.

This method was developed by founder Agnieszka Kadula and is carried out by medically trained therapists with a physiotherapy background and 2,500+ hours of training. This information is general in nature and does not replace medical advice or a diagnosis. Want to dive deeper into the technique? Discover the full BodyFix Method. Lifestyle that supports your connective tissue

Alongside a treatment, there is a lot you can do yourself to keep your tissue supple. Your fascia likes variety: moving regularly, changing posture often and not sitting still for too long give the tissue stimuli to stay supple. Drinking enough water also helps your body to hydrate, which benefits the connective tissue. These are general lifestyle tips and not medical or nutritional advice — for specific health questions it is best to consult your doctor. Do you notice persistent or unexplained changes in your skin or tissue? Then have it assessed medically first.

Frequently asked questions about fascia & ageing

How does fascia change as I get older?

As the years go by, your connective tissue gradually changes from within. The collagen and elastin that make up fascia renew themselves more slowly and the tissue holds on to less moisture. As a result, fascia can feel less elastic and a little stiffer than before. This is a normal and natural process that everyone goes through, not a condition. Many women notice it as a less supple, slightly firmer feeling in the skin and the tissue beneath it, especially in spots that have had little variation in movement for years.

Can connective tissue massage make the skin firmer?

Connective tissue massage is not a medical or cosmetic-surgical procedure and does not make the skin permanently tighter the way a treatment by a doctor would. What the technique can do is support the circulation and suppleness of the tissue, so that your skin and the fascia beneath it can feel more supple and fresher. Many women experience a more pleasant, livelier feeling and a relaxed appearance. The effect therefore lies in suppleness, circulation and feeling, not in medically firming or correcting your skin.

Is this an anti-ageing treatment?

No. Connective tissue massage is not an anti-ageing treatment and does not reverse ageing. We want to be honest about that: no massage stops or turns back the natural ageing process. What a treatment can do is make your tissue feel more supple, support circulation and contribute to a relaxed, fresh appearance. Choose connective tissue massage for how it feels and what it supports, not as a rejuvenation cure or as a substitute for medical care.

What can I do myself to keep my connective tissue supple?

Your fascia likes variety and movement. Moving regularly, changing posture often and not sitting still for too long give the tissue stimuli to stay supple. Drinking enough water also helps your body to hydrate, which benefits the connective tissue. These are general lifestyle tips and not medical or nutritional advice; for specific health questions it is best to consult your doctor. A connective tissue massage can complement these habits by helping to soften tissue that feels stiff.
