Connective tissue, fascia and sports recovery: staying supple after exercise
After a hard workout your tissue can feel stiff and tense. Discover the role your fascia plays in recovery and how deep connective tissue massage can support a more supple, freer feeling.

What exercise does to your connective tissue
During an intensive workout your muscles work hard, and the connective tissue around them works along. Fascia is the coherent web of connective tissue that envelops and connects your muscles, joints and organs. After a hard effort that tissue can feel stiff and tense: stiffness and small adhesions can temporarily limit supple movement, leaving you feeling tight, heavy or tired. That is an understandable response to the load, not a disorder. Want to read the basics first? Then have a look at what fascia actually is.

At BodyFix — specialised in connective tissue and fascia techniques since 2008 — we look at the coherence in your whole body. Local tense spots you may feel after exercising are explained in our article on trigger points and muscle knots.
Supporting recovery
How connective tissue massage supports recovery
Deep connective tissue massage targets the fascia and can help soften stiff, tense tissue. Through targeted manual techniques the connective tissue becomes more supple and circulation can be supported, which may reduce a stiff and tired feeling after exertion. Many active women experience more room to move and a lighter feeling in the body as a result. The effect lies in suppleness and relaxation — not in better performance or curing a complaint.
Softening stiff tissue
Deep techniques target the fascia and help stiff, tense spots after exertion to feel gradually more supple.
Supporting circulation
Targeted pressure on the connective tissue can support circulation, which may ease a tight, tired feeling.
Moving more freely
Many people experience more room to move and a lighter feeling, without anything being «repaired» or corrected.
Between workouts, too, a sedentary life can make your tissue stiff. How sitting still affects your fascia and what you can do about it yourself, you can read in sitting still and stiffness explained.
The difference
Not just any relaxation massage
A regular sports or relaxation massage works mainly superficially on the muscles and feels pleasant after training. The BodyFix connective tissue massage works differently: deep, targeted on the fascia and always diagnosis-first. Before the first treatment we read the body with a Bodyreading, so that we understand where your tissue feels stiff or tense and how that relates to your posture and movement. That way we focus on the connective tissue around the muscle and on the whole, and not only on the spot where you feel something.
Depth
On the fascia
Deep manual techniques target the connective tissue, not just superficially on the muscle — for a more supple, freer feeling.
Approach
Diagnosis-first
With a Bodyreading we first read the body, so that we work in a targeted way on stiff and tense zones.
No claim
No performance
Connective tissue massage does not improve performance and does not treat an injury. Choose it for how it feels and what it supports.
The BodyFix Method
How BodyFix works with your tissue
Within the BodyFix Method we first look at the whole before we begin. With a diagnosis-first approach (Bodyreading) we map out where your tissue feels stiff or tense after exertion. We then work with deep manual connective tissue massage targeted on the fascia, to help soften stiff spots gradually and support circulation. Because everything is connected, we sometimes focus on a different zone than where you experience the tension. Circulation and the carrying off of waste products run through your lymphatic system; how that works, you can read in the lymphatic system explained.
Bodyreading first
Before the first treatment we read the body and look at where fascia and tension need attention.
Deep connective tissue massage
Targeted manual techniques focus on the fascia, aimed at making stiff, tired tissue feel more supple.
Working through the whole
Because tension shifts, we look at the tissue around the complaint and not only at the spot itself.
This method was developed by founder Agnieszka Kadula and is carried out by medically trained therapists with a physiotherapy background and 2,500+ hours of training. This information is general in nature and does not replace medical advice or a diagnosis. Want to dive deeper into the technique? Good to know
When to see a doctor first
A relaxing treatment is meant to make your tissue feel more supple, not to diagnose or treat an injury. Do you have an acute injury, persistent or radiating pain, swelling or the suspicion of a medical cause? Then have it assessed first by a doctor or specialist. Massage is not a substitute for medical care. A doctor can judge what is going on and whether a treatment is sensible at that moment. With that certainty in hand, you can then explore with peace of mind what connective tissue massage may mean for your feeling of suppleness and relaxation.
Do you mainly feel a tight, tense feeling that relates to your posture after exercising? Then also read how tension travels through your body in trigger points and muscle knots explained.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about sports recovery & fascia
Does connective tissue massage help with muscle soreness after exercise?
Many people experience a more supple, less stiff feeling after a treatment, which can be welcome when your tissue feels tense after a hard workout. Deep connective tissue massage targets the fascia and can help soften stiff, tired tissue and support circulation. It is not a medical treatment for muscle soreness and not a cure promise: the benefit lies in a more supple, relaxed feeling. If the pain persists or feels sharp and radiating, have it assessed by a doctor first.
When is the best time to schedule a massage around training?
Many people choose a moment when the sharpest fatigue of a heavy effort has settled a little, so that the tissue feels calmer. Right after an intensive workout your body is still busy recovering; a day or so later a treatment often feels more pleasant. What suits you depends on your lifestyle and how your tissue responds. During the free consultation we think along about a rhythm that fits you, without promises about a fixed result.
Is this the same as a sports massage?
No. A regular sports or relaxation massage works mainly superficially on the muscles, whereas the BodyFix connective tissue massage works deep and targeted on the fascia. We also start diagnosis-first with a Bodyreading, in which we read the body before we treat. That way we focus on the connective tissue around the muscle and on the coherence in the whole body, and not only on the spot where you feel something. The aim remains a more supple, relaxed feeling, not performance improvement or medical treatment.
Can I have a connective tissue massage with an injury?
With an acute injury or pain, a doctor or specialist should first look at what is going on; massage is not a substitute for medical care and not an injury treatment. Only once a doctor has assessed that there is no objection and the area has recovered sufficiently can you explore what connective tissue massage may mean for your feeling of suppleness. If you are in doubt, discuss it during the free consultation, and together we will look at whether a treatment is sensible at that moment.
